Dreaming of lavish Palaces and exuberant expeditions bathed in exoticism, which lead us by the hand to the imaginary extreme of fantasy. This way of being and developing thought is what has allowed Ernesto (Neto) Coppel to be able to let his imagination and his spirit fly, thereby making those dreams materialize and thus become a tangible reality.
Once we were talking about our dreams and realities, where I described some surprising moments of those wonderful expeditions that my profession as an antiquarian has given me and has allowed me to live, and that for 48 years of visiting Indochina, the Philippines and that, the wonderful India, Neto suggested that knowing about pieces with meaning and soul, apart from their beauty and depth in their creation, let him know, I should send him photos of those pieces that at that moment of conversation were fantasy, more than with more than 40 years of making these trips made me fly imagining finding them surprisingly, transmitting them this language of beauty and culture and that this language could share it with Neto and him, place them in the palaces of his memory.
I undertook another trip to Asia, seeking to find the antipode, the other side of the world where our Mexico is located and which is the subcontinent of India. I visited wineries in the vicinity of the city of Mumbay where the profound English presence is felt, I continued north to the state of Karnataka and in Gujerat I admired the constant presence of the Moghul culture, a culture that permeated the Iberian Peninsula for 850 years. and whose stylistic and cultural influence reached us during the first years of the Viceroyalty to our Mexico with the so-called Mudejar style. Touring warehouses, palaces, demolitions and sales every day, and that’s how those talks began, those dreams, to materialize and become a present reality.
Sleeplessness in phone calls interspersed with photos, Neto and I communicated because these pieces talked about, dreamed of, searched for and found filled us with illusion to see those dreams palpably and have the possibility of starting to acquire wonderful pieces; An old balcony appeared with joyful polychromy and protective gods from the end of the 17th century, palatial benches set in white marble, tribal pieces from the Naga warrior tribes nestled in the Himalayas and thus, we commented on them with joy, and we made them a latent part of an excited dream, dream that I was already there, because it was already a latent reality. Thus, 4 containers were quickly filled.
In a demolition zone, like magic, palatial doors with carved stone frames like the forts and palaces of the Moghul Emperor Sha Jahan sprouted from nowhere, and the fantasy continued until filling 6 containers full of treasures.
A fantasy that we invite all of you to share with us, so that this desire to bring the magic that these pieces want to share with you.
